Abstract
The evolution of systems engineering and information technology is discussed. It is argued that there is a very important role for universities in contributing to the productivity improvements made possible by the confluence of the emerging informatics knowledge base in these areas. Internal and external changes, each associated with knowledge transfer, will be required in order to realize these new opportunities. A discussion of these and their relevance to contemporary information systems and systems design engineering is included.
