Abstract
In July, more than 50 engineering historians met in St. John´s, Newfoundland, to discuss aspects of transatlantic communication. The occasion was a conference arranged by the IEEE History Center. It was just 100 years since, on 12 December 1901, Guglielmo Marconi flew a kite from the top of Signal Hill at the entrance to St John´s harbour.
