Abstract
Summary form only given. Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys undergo the usual shape memory effect by changing temperature. It is also possible that they undergo large changes of shape by applying a magnetic field. Alloys with composition near Fe/sub 3/Pd has a highly reversible FCC to FCT transformation, have high saturation magnetization close to that of Fe, and therefore are a good candidate for ferromagnetic shape memory.
