    Summary form only given. Surface-energy-induced selective growth of grains has been suggested in thin-gauged 3%Si-Fe strips in which surface-segregated sulfur determines the grains that will grow and the segregated sulfur at grain boundaries and the average grain size govern the growth kinetics. A theory was previously proposed for explaining the formation of Goss texture in silicon steel. In this paper 100 /spl mu/m thick 3%Si-Fe strips containing 90 ppm bulk content of sulfur and no manganese were prepared for investigating the surface-energy-induced selective nucleation and growth.
