Abstract
Instructional system design (ISD) is a systematic approach to the design and development of performance based training. The key principles of ISD are: identifying what human performance needs to be changed, identifying the outcomes of the instruction, developing the instruction, implementing the instruction and evaluating the instruction´s effectiveness. Using the principles of ISD, the US Coast Guard has developed a five step model to develop performance based training programs. This ISD model also provides a different approach to the development of training materials, lending itself to a type of backward or reverse planning which can easily be adapted to develop various types of non-military training materials
