Abstract
The authors present an approach for analyzing the performance of banyan-network-based asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches built with switching modules (SMs) that can be of arbitrary sizes and contain buffers of arbitrary sizes at each output. This approach is based on a refined model that takes the blocking interdependence between SM stages into account by the introduction of the virtual queue. A comparison with simulation data indicates that the results obtained by this approach are fairly accurate for the whole range of offered load
