  • Abstract
To guarantee end-to-end performance for multimedia services, performance bounds are imposed on individual nodes. Under these bounds maximum call arrival rates supported and maximum channel utilization realized are determined. This is essentially a bandwidth allocation and call admission control problem, and thus knowledge of source behavior is critical. To this end, the elementary ON/OFF source is used to model a wide variety of the services that are expected in a broadband network. The authors characterize this source using basic parameters and show how to model representative voice, data, and video sources. They supply these parameters to extent Weinstein´s cutoff formula to compute cell overload that occurs during statistical multiplexing. The overload analysis presents a simple method of dimensioning buffer sizes at a node to meet delay and cell loss requirements
