Abstract
This paper proposes node and network models for achieving Internet Protocol (IP)-based direct communication between "things" in a machine-to-machine (M2M) network or an Internet of Things (IoT) network, in which machines or things communicate with each other without human intervention. The proposed node model is more advantageous than those based on conventional technologies in that nodes, which are constrained by limited power and processing resources, can communicate with other nodes just as they can communicate with PCs and servers connected to the Internet. The proposed network model enables M2M/IoT networks to exchange IP routing information, thereby achieving load balancing and high reliability for connections to the Internet.
