  • Abstract
EtherCore products provide the LAN manufacturer with a flexible platform for enhanced system performance, product differential, and lower cost. These advantages are possible due to the generic nature of the MAC and the functional partitioning employed. All the functions can be implemented as standard products for quick time-to-market, or used as standard cell cores for product customization to achieve piece/performance objectives. In either case, the system integrator retains control over the hardware and the ability to build in specific value added. By so doing, the performance of the system may be improved, while still meeting market-driven cost demands. The strategy can be extended with simple modifications to support full-duplex operation at the host interface and the LAN interface. Combining this mode with switching capabilities effectively doubles the throughput, enabling support for multi-media applications. The same approach can be applied to faster Ethernet protocols for higher speed networking requirements
