Abstract
A description is given of a project to build an expert system which will help financial institutions such as banks or savings and loans to optimize check routing with respect to processing costs and fund availabilities. This system is currently being developed for the IBM AS/400 system using IBM´s Knowledge Tool. The actual knowledge elicitation has involved a number of item processing experts known as float managers. The system is menu driven. However, some experimental work that employs a natural language expert system interface may have applications in this project, particularly if Prolog becomes available for the AS/400 system
