Abstract
Since 1986 there has been much hype about the new high temperature superconductors. However, much work was needed to process these materials into a suitable form. Now that more useful materials are available, it has become clear that properties other than the high current ability of these materials are useful, more specifically it is the hysteretic nature of the magnetisation of these materials which is exploited in the motors described in this work. This paper specifically addresses the measurement and the calculation of the torque speed curve of these hysteretic motors. Three topologies of motor are investigated. Of these the single domain YBCO performs the best, although there is a problem in generating a large applied magnetic field from a conventional stator
