  • Abstract
A guided-mode resonance mirror (GMRM) is introduced as a combination of a guide-mode resonance filter (GMRF) and a high reflection substrate. GMRF consists of a waveguide grating on a transparent substrate and couples an incident free-space wave of resonance wavelength to a guided mode to show a narrow band reflection spectrum as well as large wavelength dependence of the reflection phase. The combination results in a formation of a vertical cavity for the resonance wavelength. GMRM is expected to be an attractive external mirror for a laser system because of its unique reflection characteristics. In this paper, theoretical analysis of reflection characteristics of GMRM is given with preliminarily experimental results of an aperture-miniaturized GMRM. Design consideration of GMRM for a cavity formation is also discussed.
