Abstract
In this paper, we propose in the context of Internet browsing a method to generate a patch that will convert a stale web object into its most current version. The patch, which is a sequence of edit operations, is delivered to the client, and the client uses the patch to update the stale object that is retrieved from its local cache or a nearby cache server. This incremental update scheme can reduce the average response time and increase cache-hit rate. We unify the Web object into a corresponding tree. In the tree space, we generate the patch on the Web object using a dynamic instruction set. We also discuss patch on raw data with awareness of the underlying file application.
