Abstract
Control over the network is a popular approach to control complex and distributed systems. However, delays are induced by the network, leading to the degradation in control performance. To analyze the characteristics of these delays, experiments are conducted to collect and to analyze the round trip time (RTT) between Beijing and Hong Kong. These results are presented in this paper. Large surges with short durations in the RTT are observed. As these large surges are random, modeling and forecasting them are difficult. Nonetheless, the RTT are modeled by AR models, from which it is shown that the improvement in using these model to forecast the RTT is small compared with the magnitude of the large surge in the RTT. This result is useful in formulating the control strategy for control over the network.
