Abstract
Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technologies and systems are gaining more popularity and greater attention in wireless communication research all over the world, due to their enormous capacity enlargement. Motivated by the need for fundamental understanding of ultimate limits of MIMO systems, this paper presents a detailed and complete derivation of MIMO capacity in frequency-nonselective fading environments by conducting a "quasi-static" analysis. Then we investigate theoretically how spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity improve MIMO capacity. Finally, simulation results are presented to illustrate the enormous capacity enlargement in MIMO systems.
