Abstract
A new approach to the processing of radar altimeter data is studied in order to estimate characteristic parameters of the observed surface which are not given by conventional processing. The performance of an estimator based on the maximum likelihood principle is discussed. Given a suitable model of the surface echo and under some general hypotheses, the architecture and performance of both a monodimensional and a bidimensional estimator are worked out with respect to the theoretical Cramer-Rao bounds.
