Abstract
The problem associated with creating batches of printed-circuit cards for assembly on an automatic insertion machine is examined. The machine has a fixed amount of capacity for staging component magazines. Each component type is used on at least one card type assembled and requires some portion of the staging resource. There is enough staging resource to accommodate component types required by one or more card types. The problem associated with selecting, in real time, a batch of card types queued up in front of an insertion machine is discussed with the constraint that the total staging requirement for the batch does not exceed the staging resource. In addition, a number of theoretical issues associated with the problem are examined, and two online solution procedures are developed.<>
