  • Abstract
Restructuring, new intermittent generation sources and new customer load types in the electricity industry have increased the need for wide-area tracking and trending of load-generation and transmission resources adequacy and reliability for organizations responsible for maintaining wide-area reliability such as NERC, and for regulatory agencies such as FERC and DOE. Reliability tracking and trending tools are required for timely identification of resources inadequacies and unusual reliability trends at wide-area levels. Research results for new tools concepts, processes, and prototypes together with field experience for wide-area Automated Reliability Reports (ARR) using phasor and SCADA measurements will be presented. Load-generation resources adequacy tracking and trending ARR reports are now automatically delivering wide-area reliability data and information on interconnections primary and secondary control performance that were previously available only in text format and required considerable time to produce and to assess root causes for resources inadequacy and reliability abnormal events. The Consortium for Electric Reliability Technology Solutions (CERTS), NERC and FERC technical staffs experience with these wide-area ARR reports demonstrates that they can be effectively integrated into wide-area reliability tracking and trending processes, alert reliability agencies´ technical staffs on wide-area resources inadequacy, and help minimize interconnections reliability risks.
