Abstract
Packet segmentation which allows the recovery of partial information in the event of packet collisions on random-access channels is considered, and a systematic method for quantifying the performance analysis of such schemes is given. It is shown that the approach allows performance comparable to that of slotted schemes and offers the advantage that global timing is not required. This can be particularly useful for satellite channels where large propagation delay and guard times are significant features
