Karst rocky desertification is a typical type of land degradation in the southwestern China. It has great ecological and economical implications for the local people. In this study, the effect of some influencing factors (precipitation, relative humidity, temperature, hillside slope and vegetation type) on soil moisture content were investigated. The soil moisture content increased with the increase of the precipitation. Very obvious interrelationships between soil moisture content and relative humidity (R2 = 0.976), and between soil moisture content and temperature were found, indicating relative humidity and temperature are also both important influencing factors on soil moisture content when the precipitation is very lower. Based on the comparison of soil moisture content at different vegetation type, it can be concluded that the grain plots should be returned in order to increase soil moisture content and reduce karst rocky desertification area.
