The teaching of applied image processing at the University of Brighton

In 1987/88 the undergraduate courses in Electrical and Electronic Engineering were fundamentally redesigned in response to the changing needs of industry. The aim was to produce a thoroughly modern and relevant course which presented the discipline from a `top-down´ perspective. It also featured fully integrated Engineering Applications and commercial awareness and a learning environment where the establishment of rigid subject boundaries is actively discouraged. Another prime requirement was that graduates should be able to work competently in teams and communicate effectively at all levels with their peers. A programme of phased, integrative assignments runs through the first two years of the course, providing the core study of the discipline. Each assignment is supported, rather than pre-empted, by relevant lecture material and laboratory supervision by a teaching team. The cohesiveness of the whole course is maintained by an extensive monitoring and management infrastructure
