Prospects for expert systems in fault recorders [for power systems]

This paper aims to discuss two aspects of expert systems that can be applied to disturbance recorders. The first is to apply expert systems to reduce the volume of data to be retrieved from fault recorders and hence reduce the work load on the protection engineer who has to analyze these records. The second aspect is to apply expert systems to the analysis of these records to produce routine fault reports and to use the data from these records to help determine when circuit breakers require maintenance
