  • Abstract
    This paper proposes a new kind of expandable ATM interfacing and switching card, which consists of an ATM physical layer interface, ATM layer translating logic, shared buffer switching element, ATM signaling processing unit as well as a computer control system. The new card can accomplish functions of inserting and extracting line signaling and analysis of it on-board. So the connection switching between the UNI interfaces within the board can be done internally. Because the switching element has folding property, through a backplane shuffle interconnecting network, many cards can be interconnected together to construct a distributed ATM switch with large capacity. As a result, the distributed ATM switch can expand its capacity smoothly and has a high performance/cost ratio. The architecture design, system components and detailed implementation are given.
