  • Abstract
    Spectral selection and hierarchical build up are two progressive coding modes which have been defined for the emerging Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) compression standard. An analysis is made of the progressive JPEG still image coding scheme which introduces different alternatives for the transform coding block. The various solutions are compared in terms of coding efficiency, codec complexity, and quality impact measured for the successive coding steps
