Abstract
The author presents the essential features of magnetic and optical recording channels and describes the error correction, modulation coding, and detection schemes used in four different products: magnetic-disk drives, computer-tape systems, rotary-digital audio tape, and compact-disk read-only memory. To encourage more involvement from the communications community, the magnitude of the storage industry is emphasized and the technical areas with the most opportunity are highlighted
