Abstract
Two-dimensional multiwavelet functions and matrix filter banks, which allow the use of multiple scaling functions are treated. Generalizing to multiwavelets introduces greater flexibility in the design of the transform functions and filters. Necessary and sufficient conditions for obtaining approximation of order p are given. A design method for two-dimensional orthogonal multiwavelets with a specified order of approximation is provided, and examples are derived for the quincunx case with a multiplicity of r=2
