Abstract
The deployment strategy for fiber systems in the Italian trunk network is described, with particular reference to the envisaged use of the STM-16 (2.5-Gb/s) bit rate. The present situation and the evolution toward the target synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) network structure are shown. Consequent requirements for the SDH equipment. to be used are derived. Application examples are presented for a regional and a metropolitan area case study
