Abstract
We discuss a new sharpness enhancement algorithm that takes into account information that is present in MPEG encoded video. For emerging multimedia devices like storage products, PDA, Personal TV, etc., the traditional sharpness enhancement algorithms may perform sub-optimally on MPEG encoded or transcoded video, due to the different characteristics of their sources. The key to our solution is to optimally combine statistical information from the MPEG bitstream with slightly modified existing sharpness enhancement algorithms, in order to obtain an improved picture quality. Experimental results show an improvement in picture quality for MPEG encoded source material. Comparing the results to algorithms that do not use coding information is planned for our future work
