Abstract
This paper introduces a multi-resolution-based method for the accurate and computationally efficient registration of complex triangle meshes. As an improved method of ICP (iterative closest point), our algorithm speeds up the convergence. PM (progressive mesh) is used as the representation of a multi-resolution mesh. In addition, we present a new method to guarantee the registration to converge on the desired global minimum. As we know, ICP stars with two meshes and an initial guess for their relative rigid-body transform. When the initial guess is not proper, it may fall into wrong local minima. Our method can find out an initial transform which leads to a correct registration.
