Abstract
Mobile applications nowadays gain more and more momentum. With respect to mobile phones as client-side end devices, WAP is a well-known, albeit - for several reasons - not very popular technique. One drawback of WAP stems from the limitations inherent in its browser-based environment. Using distributed object applications on top of smartphones is a promising future alternative. However, current middleware, for example CORBA, is streamlined for use in resource-rich environments and thus is not well suited for wireless domains. The paper introduces WAPIOP which is aimed at leveraging the use of CORBA in mobile networks by providing an optimized communication protocol tightly integrated with WAP.
