Abstract
As integration accelerates personal computer microprocessor complexity, the addition of on-chip, first level caches improve overall system performance. This paper investigates the effects of different first level (L1) caches for the 486 microprocessor with respect to popular application software for x86 based personal computers. Additionally, this paper investigates various cache improvements to address the changing system requirements for personal computers.<>
