Planning for full use of the UHF television and mobile radio bands

This paper describes the background to the allocation of the 806-890 MHz band to land mobile services in Canada, and the potential Interference problems arising from the operation of mobile radio systems and television in the adjacent bands around 800 MHz in the same area. Included is a discussion of the policy initiatives and the implementation procedures taken by the Department of Communications to alleviate the occurance of image interference so that both mobile systems and television stations could operate in their allocated bands without undue constraints. In the short term, assuming no change to the present day TV receiver standards, the implementation conditions require that there be no image relationship between the frequency channel of television stations assigned or allotted in an area and mobile base stations assigned in the same area. Limitations had to be placed on mobile radio system development in some Canadian cities in the short term, and television channel allotments have been restricted in a few cases. In the long term, a more effective way in dealing wlth this problem will be through the introduction of an improved television receiver.
