Abstract
Suitable voice traffic characterization and a novel two-queue model for the analysis of ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks with voice/data integrated traffic are proposed. Voice is given a higher priority than data, and data traffic is a combination of single cells (packets) and bursts. The voice and data arrival processes are characterized by a Markov chain and mixed Poisson process (a combination of pure Poisson and compound Poisson processes), respectively. Finite and infinite data queue cases are analyzed along with a finite voice queue. The performance measures, mean waiting times, and blocking probabilities are derived, and the effects of the number of accepted calls on the performance measures are portrayed. Numerical results are provided, and two other related models are also evaluated for comparison purposes
