Abstract
Results obtained by different research groups assumed that the traffic can be modelled as a stochastic process and linked to the loss at the multiplexer and to the moment generating function of this process. This paper deals with the problem of estimating the multiplexer loss when there are traffic measurements available. It proposes a new method for the measurement and estimation of the packet loss in packet switched networks, namely it uses this model to calculate the moment generating function. Simulation results, using traces obtained from traffic measurements and from digitized video sequences, are given.
