Abstract
The policing problem is one of the most critical congestion control problems in ATM networks. It has been proved that the leaky bucket (LB), the most well known traffic enforcement mechanism, does not achieve to control efficiently the behaviour of a source. We investigate the performance of a new policing mechanism, called LB-SELA, compared with LB, in an internodal node where many sources share the same buffer. As the simulation results show, the better control of a source by LB-SELA leads to fewer cell losses and to smaller cell delays. Thus, it achieves better statistical gain and it guarantees QoS constraints much better than the original LB does
