Abstract
We discuss a recent thrust in the general area of driven atoms, wherein, the properties of a Stokes pulse are controlled via the application of a pump pulse. Specifically, we demonstrate, through analytic and numerical calculations, that the amplitude and phase of the Stokes pulse can be manipulated via the input pump pulse. Specific applications to the production and tailoring of optical solitons in two- and three-level atoms are reported, and we also explore the role of the initial conditions on the atom and field parameters, which can be exploited towards pulse engineering
