Abstract
This paper describes the "MAXSHIFT" method for ROI coding in the JPEG2000 standard, which allows coding of the ROIs without transmitting any shape information to the decoder. No shape decoding and no ROI mask generation are required at the decoder. This document also describes a method for fast ROI mask generation for rectangular ROI, and how it can be extended to apply to arbitrarily shaped ROI. This shows that a ROI capable codec that handles arbitrarily shaped ROI, need not be significantly more complex than a non-ROI capable codec. The MAXSHFT method is included in Part I of the JPEG2000 compression system, while the more general scaling based method is likely to be in JPEG2000 Part II.
