Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new approach for implementing document management systems (DMSs) based on a latest IETF specification: WebDAV. As a protocol-level specification, WebDAV enables users to directly manipulate documents on the Web through standard Web browsers. We then introduce a prototype DMS implementation called “Collaborative Workbench”, which, besides WebDAV, also adopts an enterprise-level platform: J2EE as its foundation. Facilitated by sets of latest Java technologies, e.g., EJB and JSP, J2EE ensures the scalability, availability, and security of the system
