We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the multiple pulsing behaviour of an erbium-doped double-clad fiber laser passively mode-locked through nonlinear polarization rotation. Hysteresis phenomena are predicted theoretically and found experimentally in both the normal and anomalous dispersion regime
