Abstract
A transient fault location method based on voltage distribution over the HVDC line is proposed in the paper. The proposed algorithm calculates the voltage derivatives along the line using the distributed parameter model of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line, and uses this information to obtain the boundary point between steady state and transient state line sections after a fault, then derived the fault distance from the measuring point. Extensive PSCAD/ EMTDC simulation studies show that the proposed algorithm is feasible, accurate, not affected by fault resistance, with calculation error is within two hundred meters.
