Abstract
This study presents a new topology for alternative power sources, namely interleaved boost converter with current ripple reduction (IBC-CRR), which discards electrolytic capacitors to enlarge the life-span of the converter by using current ripple reduction (CRR) technique. The voltage spikes on switches are eliminated resulting of using of low on-resistance (RDS(ON)) MOSFETs to improve efficiency and reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI). Moreover, the proposed topology also provides a high voltage-gain and a continuous conduction mode (CCM) input current operation. These features are suitable for alternative power sources such as PV and fuel-cell. Addition to providing circuit analysis and detailed consideration, two laboratory prototypes of the proposed topology and conventional topology operated under 36-72 V input, 400 V/400 W output were built and inspected to compare their performances. The experimental results shown that the proposed circuit had following superiorities compared with the conventional circuits. A small output voltage ripple was attained with 4.7 μF non-electrolytic capacitors. Because the voltage spikes on MOSFETs were completely eliminated, low RDS(on) MOSFETs were used to improved efficiency. The input current was CCM operation requiring smaller input filtering.
