  • Abstract
A novel approach to trellis-coded modulation on fading ISI channels is presented. This approach, named systematic trellis-coded modulation (STCM), is suitable for erasure-free reception with sequential decoding in systems that do not use ARQ. The code design principles for STCM are described, along with a systematic detection algorithm, and the structure of a dual-mode receiver for STCM with sequential and systematic detection. Good STCM codes are obtained through computer searches that use both symmetric and asymmetric signal constellations
