Abstract
The two incidents described were chosen because they were both thoroughly investigated, the mechanisms involved were unusual but may be relevant to other industrial situations and, in both instances, the mechanism that caused the ignitions could be reproduced. They relate to explosions of handlamps considered safe in flammable atmospheres and of lead/acid batteries during removal of plastic labels
