  • Abstract
The WiMAX network architecture has an Access Service Network (ASN) which provides level 2 access and which contains a group of Base Stations connected to an ASN-Gateway, and a Connectivity Service Network (CSN) which contains an authentication server and a mobility anchor and which provides access to the Internet or other Application Service networks. WiMAX defines procedures for ASN-anchored mobility for handover across Base Stations within an access network and also defines procedures for CSN-anchored mobility for handover across access networks. CSN-anchored mobility builds upon the IETF Client Mobile IP (CMIP) and Proxy Mobile IP protocols (PMIP) with either a Home Agent (HA) or Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) in the CSN. This paper defines an alternative to CSN-anchored mobility using CMIP or PMIP by anchoring mobility at the Correspondent Node rather than within the CSN. Provisions for securing connections to the Correspondent Node anchor are also described.
