Abstract
A three-stage knowledge-acquisition strategy for knowledge-based pattern recognition (PR) problem solving has been proposed. The strategy consists of building an interactive work system, knowledge accumulation in a long period interaction between the human operator (system builder) and the computer, and replacement of the human operator by the accumulated knowledge. This strategy has been successfully applied to the development of the knowledge based version of ISOETRP clustering procedure. This practice shows that this three-stage strategy can work well in many PR applications
