Abstract
A hierarchical distributed multicast management architecture (HDMMA) is proposed to extend the private network-network interface (PNNI) protocol and active multicast service architecture (AMSA) to support native ATM multipoint-to-multipoint multicast (MTM). Simulation results show that the joining latency is not sensitive to the growth of both network size and multicast group size. The memory consumption in an individual physical multicast membership server (PMMS) reduces significantly by using the hierarchical distributed membership management architecture. In general, the proposed HDMMA with source-rooted MTM is suitable for multicast service management with dense mode and has high overhead with sparse mode in large ATM networks.
