Abstract
The transient response of a polarographic probe which is used to measure metabolically inert hydrogen gas concentration is characterized. The purpose is to permit development of quicker estimation procedures for measuring concentration when H2 is used as the tracer in blood perfusion studies. Probes are inserted into the thigh muscle and the lumbar area of anesthetized beagles and the resulting responses analyzed by multiexponential curve fitting and analysis of variance. Time constants and weightings are not significantly different with changes in H2 level or ischemia. However, a dependence on the type of tissue is observed. The results suggest that predictive methods are possible for reducing measurement time for a given tissue type
