  • Abstract
Microstrip antennas (MSA) have several advantages like low cost, low profile planar configuration but suffer from the disadvantages of small bandwidth. Also, its size is large for operation in the UHF band (300-3000 MHz). In this paper, rectangular MSA (RMSA) and shorted RMSA are discussed. A new compact broadband configuration using a quarter wave stepped U-slot cut in the shorted square MSA (SMSA) is proposed, which shows the bandwidth enhancement without increasing its size. All the MSAs are analyzed using IE3D software followed by experimental verification.
