  • Abstract
The construction and operation of a fiber-optic network between Chicago and Kansas City are discussed. The initial network was extended to Los Angeles. The fiber-optic backbone network is equipped with 405 Mb/s, 560 Mb/s, 810 Mb/s, and 1.2 Gb/s optoelectronics. The network was later expanded south to Dallas, Houston, and New Orleans, increasing total fiber plant mileage to 4600 miles. The expanded network plan included a 3000-mile fiber optic network extending from Chicago to Los Angeles and a 1000-mile microwave network consisting of two routes: a 32-hop system extending from Evanston, Wyoming to Boise, Idaho and Portland, Oregon: and a two hop spur from Hesston, Kansas to Wichita, Kansas. The network design is outlined along with network supervisor, centralization, and synchronization
