  • Abstract
To achieve the ambitious requirements introduced for future wireless systems, new ´intelligent´ or ´self-configured´ and highly efficient systems will be required. In the pursuit of such schemes attention has turned to advanced antenna techniques such as smart or adaptive antennas. A novel distributed load-balancing scheme for cellular networks, which intelligently changes cellular coverage according to the geographic traffic distribution in real time has been investigated. A cooperative negotiation approach with semi-smart antennas for the real time control of the cellular network coverage is used. In this paper the concept behind a semi-smart antenna in such a scheme is briefly described, while concentrating our discussion more on the problem of shaped pattern synthesis for linear arrays, which forms the basis of such a semi-smart antenna concept.
